PUC 1year Sem-2 Physics Syllabus - 
Course Learning Objectives:
1. To gain the basic knowledge on the motion of system of particles with concept of center of mass, momentum of inertia with rigid body dynamics.
2. To gain the basic knowledge on the universal law of gravitation and its application the motion of the satellites under the gravity.
3. To advance knowledge on the mechanical properties of solids and fluids.
4. To gain the detail knowledge on the heat energy and its behaviour on matter while transfer. In
addition the basic fundamental law of thermodynamics and various thermodynamic processes.
5. To advance basic knowledge on kinetic theory of gases and specific heat capacity of gases and
applications.
6. To gain basics on periodic motion and its characteristics as well simple harmonic motion with few examples in real life.

PUC 1year Sem-2 Physics Syllabus

Course Content:
Unit I: Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body dynamics (12 Hours)
Centre of mass of a two-particle system, Motion of Centre of Mass. Centre of mass for different rigid bodies, Angular displacement, angular velocity and acceleration, rotation with constant angular acceleration, relating linear and angular quantities, energy in rotational motion, Moment of Inertia, derivation of moment of inertia for uniform rod, ring,(formulas for sphere, cylinder and sheet) , Theorem of parallel axes theorem, Theorem of perpendicular axes and their applications, torque, angular momentum, conservation of angular momentum with some examples, Equilibrium of a rigid body.

Unit II: Gravitation (09 Hours)
Universal law of Gravitation, weight, acceleration due to gravity and its variation with altitude and depth, Kepler‟s laws of planetary motion, Gravitational Potential Energy, Gravitational Potential, motion of the satellites, Escape speed, orbital velocity of a satellite, Geostationary satellites

Unit III: Properties of Bulk Matter (12 Hours) Elastic properties of solids: Stress and strain, Hooke‟s law, Young‟s modulus, Bulk modulus, shear modulus of rigidity and stress- strain curve, Fluid statics: Pressure due to a fluid column, Pascal‟s law and its application (hydraulic lift), Buoyancy and Archimedes principle, Fluid dynamics: Ideal fluid and characteristics of ideal fluid, Streamline flow, turbulent flow, equation of continuity, Bernoulli‟s theorem and its applications ( venture-meter, Aerofoil and dynamic lift.), concept of Viscosity, Surface tension and surface energy, Angle of contact, capillary rise.

Unit IV: Heat (09 Hours)
Temperature and Heat, Measurement of Temperature with different scales, Thermal Expansion of solids, liquids and gases, Anomalous behavior of water, heat capacity, specific heat Capacity, Latent Heat, Calorimetry Principle, Heat transfer – conduction, convection and Radiation, Thermal conductivity, Newton‟s law of cooling, Blackbody Radiation laws.

Unit V: Thermodynamics (10 Hours)
Thermal Equilibrium, definition of zeroth law of Thermodynamics, Gas laws and Ideal gas equation, First law of Thermodynamics, Heat, Internal Energy and Work, Thermodynamic processes (isothermal, adiabatic, isobaric, isochoric, cyclic, reversible and irreversible), relation between P, V and T in isothermal and adiabatic process, work done in isothermal process, work done in adiabatic process, Second law of thermodynamics, Heat Engines, Refrigerators and Heat Pumps.


Unit VI: Oscillations (08 Hours)
Periodic and Oscillatory motions, Period and frequency, displacement as a function of time, restoring force, Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) its characteristics, Oscillations due to a spring –block system, energy in SHM – kinetic and potential energies, simple pendulum, Damped Simple Harmonic Motion (qualitative ideas only), Forced oscillations and Resonance.
